Guide to buying a Cot Bed or Cot
Cot Beds
What is a cot bed?
A cot bed is a large cot that converts into a junior bed as your child grows and can be used for a child to sleep in up to the approx age of 5 years of age. This can help make the traumatic move from familiar cot to an exposed open bed more bearable for some toddlers. With a cot bed, your baby will feel reassured that his bed times surroundings are familiar. The bed will also be a smaller junior bed, which some toddlers may prefer to a larger one. But it does not mean that he will grow out of it sooner. Exactly when he grows out of it depends on the size of your child and the bed, but it’s usually around the age of five. A Cot Bed will be a little more expensive than a cot but bearing in mind the return on time it will save you more money in the long run.
What features should I look out for?
Adjustable base height: some cot beds let you adjust the height of the mattress base at the highest position, making it easier on your back.. It’s a good idea to lower the base when your baby is old enough to pull himself up, so that he stays secure in the cot.
Teething Rails: Many cots also have a teething rail, which is a protective plastic coating around the edges, to prevent your baby chewing on the wooden slats of the cot when he is older.
Mattress: Cot beds vary in size, so always double check you’re buying the right size mattress. Even a 4cm gap between the mattress and cot bed is enough for your baby to trap an arm or a leg. And make sure you check to see if the mattress is included in the price-it usually isn’t.
Cots
What is a cot?
A cot will be smaller and less expensive than a cot bed. A cot will probably be your baby's bed until he is two or three years old.
Why should I consider a cot?
The merits of buying a cot as opposed to buying a cot bed is that it is firstly smaller than the Cot Bed so if your Nursery Room for your baby is small and compact a Cot will suit the room better. Some parents who may be planning on adding to their family within 2 to 3 years may not want to buy another Cot Bed and make the decision to transfer their toddler to a bigger bed and use the Cot for their second baby and then never use the functionality of the junior bed.
What safety features should I be aware of?
- Check your cot conforms with the BS EN 716-1 safety code, which ensures the cot is deep enough to prevent your baby from climbing out.
- Ensure the mattress fits the cot with no gaps
- Make sure the bars of the cot are no more than 45mm to 65mm apart.
Guide to buying the correct Cot/Cot Bed mattress?
In JellyBean we would always advise that the mattress is one of the most important purchases you will make when the time is right for your baby to move into their cot/cotbed. When you start researching you will find that there are a lot of options on the market and it can be very confusing as to what to choose or how much to spend?
We decided to make this simplier by firstly explaining the different types of mattress and what their features & merits are? We never force a particular mattress on a couple as we believe that you have to make up your own mind and consider quality, safety features and budget.
Firstly THE FOUNDATION FOR STUDY OF INFANT DEATHS states that it does not matter what kind of mattress you use as long as it is firm and not soft, fits the cot without any gaps.
What should I look out for in all mattress types?
Look for a cot mattress that is 10cm thick. Anything thinner won't provide the support your baby needs. Thin foam in particular can lose its shape and dent easily hence the reason at JellyBean we do not stock foam mattress.

Aerosleep Cot/Cot Bed Mattresses
What is an Aerosleep Mattress?
- Thanks to a unique knitting process, AeroSleep is a mattress cover which consists for 95% of open space. You can compress the 3D structure between two fingers but not across a larger surface. This structure ensures that underneath the body there is a ventilation layer through which the air circulates freely. Nowhere does the body come into direct contact with the mattress. This reduces both particular possible risks of cot death and sweating during the night.
How should I wash my AeroSleep?
- Always fold the AeroSleep with the 3D structure on the outside and preferably put it in the washing machine on its own. A washing programme for white laundry at 60°C is sufficient to make sure it comes out as good as new.
What is the difference between AeroSleep and an ordinary mattress?
A conventional mattress protector consists of an impermeable layer which often causes a sweaty and therefore uncomfortable feeling.
AeroSleep has created a layer of air on top of the impermeable layer. This layer of air ensures that the body does not come into contact with the impermeable absorption layer below. This means that you lie on air and not directly on the fabric. Because of this, skin irritations disappear like snow in the sun.
Moreover, during sleep surplus body heat is evacuated and fresh air is supplied from the ambient surroundings. In this way, body temperature can be kept under control and there will be no more perspiration. This way AeroSleep guarantees a well-ventilated sleeping climate without sweating.

When buying a changing unit for changing your baby please note a few points on what to look out for ensuring that you spend your money on what your needs are?
What is a Changing Unit and what are the benefits of using one?
A changing unit is firstly designed to raise your baby up to your waist height so that you do not have to kneel on the floor or bend over on a bed to change your baby’s nappy. This not only removes the strain on your back from changing your baby on the floor but also provides a safe and secure changing area for you to change your baby – most changing units will have designated shelves, drawers for your to store essential baby changing items.
Changing Units usually consist of a “changer” which sits on the top of a set of drawers or shelves/drawers which are designed to hold your babies changing essentials or clothes or baby bedding.
This changer normally has raised sides, some changers have these raised sides all around or some (which have drawers underneath i.e. chest of drawers) have what is called a changing extension on the back with these raised sides on either side of the unit. These are not glued down (but some can be glued)so can be easily removed thus converting the changing unit into a functional chest of drawers which will grown with your child. The importance at the start is your babies safety so as they move that accidents are prevented. A changing mat can be placed at the top of the changer making it comfortable and hygienic for your baby. Deciding on what is best for you is a personal choice.
It is important when deciding on a changing unit that you consider the height of the person who will use it most. All our changing units at JellyBean are sturdy changing units which are very practical with options of Nursery Storage underneath.
If after measuring your babies nursery you may decide that you do not have room for a changing unit so another option may be to buy a cot top changers which are a great alternative when space is an issue. This cot top changer sits on the top of the cot and can be “strapped” onto the top rails of the cot thus making it very secure when changing your baby. If you are looking for other storage ideas for your babies nursery think about putting a shelf for easy storage or a way of decorating a nursery room when it is tight on space.
JellyBean Tip: Never leave your baby unattended even if you are using a raised top changing unit. So it is advisable that all changing essentials are within easy reach.
What to look for when buying a wardrobe for my baby’s nursery room?
A wardrobe for your baby can provide abundant in clothes storage. A couple of options are firstly to decide whether you want the wardrobe to match in with the rest of your Nursery Furniture. Whatever your budget is, think about how long you plan to have the baby in this room, getting a decent size wardrobe will be a sound investment as storage as they grow will always be a concern. Again measure your room, traditionally babies rooms are normally the smallest room in the house so a wardrobe may not fit, baby furniture suppliers can change styles from time to time so bear this in mind if you decide in a year or so to move your little one into a bigger room and look for a co-coordinating wardrobe.
Do you want a full sized wardrobe with hanging rails and shelves or would a tall boy suit the nursery better. Also more suppliers are listening to their customers and ensuring that the maximum space within the wardrobe is used with adjustable shelves. Some have half shelves and half rails thus allowing you maximum storage options .Will your baby continue to use the wardrobe into his or her teens? Do you then want a double wardrobe with the extra space this brings? Do you need adjustable shelves? Do you want the wardrobe to include small or large draws?
A wardrobe for your nursery does not need to be plain wood, also available are stained woods, coloured veneers and glass panels. Whichever wardrobe you choose will depend upon your needs, the design of your nursery and how long you plan to keep the furniture.
Such a lovely time is in the excitement of preparing for your baby’s arrival in decorating and preparing the baby nursery. Looking at transforming an ordinary room into a little haven for your baby to grow is such a magical occasion.
A few points to look at when decorating your baby’s room:
Nursery Walls
Nursery Walls are probably the best place to start with – painting your baby’s nursery a neutral colour will allow you then to look at so many options in decorating these walls.
A popular choice has been nursery wallpaper which can cover an entire wall (8ft x 10ft) with the cartoon characters, jungle/farm inspired animals, themed movies characters allowing your child’s imagination and development to grow in the wonder of colour and imagery. This option of a feature wall is great as it can be changed rather than changing all the walls in the baby’s nursery. Not all rooms though would have the space be able to carry an entire wall of this sort of wallpaper. Another great option is wall stickers which can be cleverly placed to cover a wall or the entire room. Again the variety in these is fantastic with so many themes such as Dinosaur Stickers, Pirate Stickers, Fairy Princess Stickers, Farm Yard Stickers to name but a few.
In our nursery shop in Cork we specialize in personalized canvas art which can be customized to include date of birth, time of birth etc or a particular theme which is appropriate to your family.
Wall Art – we are also introducing a number of new suppliers who carry a great selection in Wall Art to complement your nursery room.
Nursery Windows
You will want to make your baby’s nursery a really dark place to sleep as this will be much easier to convince your little one that it is nighttime when they go for their day naps. We recommend that you invest in either well lined curtains or another option are black out blinds. Black out blinds are simple blinds that fit close to the window and literally block out the light which means that you do not have to go to the expensive of buying or making heavy curtains without compromising your nursery theme.
A word of warning though; make sure any blinds or curtains that you fit in your baby's nursery (or in the rest of the house for that matter) don't have any cords, tassels or beads that could be a potential hazard when your baby starts to move around solo. You should avoid putting cots, changing tables or any other 'climbable furniture in front of the window too.
Nursery Decoration
Once you sort out the basics such as the walls and the windows, nursery decorations can really help you transform your baby’s nursery.
Bedding – this is a good place to start with whether you choose neutral bedding, a more colourful bedding range or themed bedding ranges, we at JellyBean will have co-ordinating decorations such as colourful pictures, cot mobiles to help stimulate development, clothes hampers, nappy stacker, lampshades or lamps allowing you so many options to creating the perfect haven for your little one!!!
